We have a theme, dates and — best of all — a graphic for Simply Sci-Fi. Because, let’s face it, people want to see a rocket flying over the San Diego skyline before they’re going to buy tickets. And, speaking of tickets, they go on sale to the public on Monday!
Yes. That’s a full three months before opening. And, no, we haven’t chosen plays, directors, actors… But we have a location and, with only 40 seats, you run the risk of a sellout. But don’t worry.
We hired a robot to sell you tickets.
Now about the plays. We have the difficult task of winnowing the plays down to an eventual evening of theatre. Most likely six to eight 10-minute plays. But we’re a process-oriented organization dedicated to play development so we will first have a table read with playwrights, the New Play Cafe people, and a group we’re calling the Director’s Council.
The idea is to get local directors and local playwrights together to develop relationships and for playwrights to hear many voices for feedback. At the table read, plays will be read aloud and discussed, and playwrights will have an opportunity to make changes before we choose the final plays for production. But first…
In order to make sure the table read is not too long, we have to get our 17 submissions down to a manageable 6-10 plays and that process is twofold. Plays that do not fit the criteria will be deselected. Then our founders and the Directors Council read the plays, give a “Yes” or “No” vote on each play and a mathematical formula is applied. The top plays make it to the table read.
From there, subjectivity takes place and we choose plays that create an evening of theatre, fit the theme and location and entertain you, the ticket-buying public.
So. If you need to know which plays we’re doing, you’ll have to wait until July. But know this: people are buying tickets to Simply Sci-Fi as you read this. Especially those who have found the secret ticket link within this post.
